  • Session B-3: Flowing Your Notetaking During the Debate Tournament

If you have spent some time in debate, you probably have a great system for taking notes during the debate to help you and your team point out to the judges when your opponents have failed to give evidence to their statements or do not show a relevant impact of the argument they are using to defend their position.

Beginning debaters have a problem with note taking and can use your assistance to help them become good note takers. It's best to avoid the begininng debaters frustraton and feeling of being overwhelmed while in a debate situation.

This section will probably take you the most time (give yourself 2 hours for his section alone) and it is the most important section to prepre you for debating with your teammates!

Take a look at the attached 8 min video on Flowing during debate that is used for the Beginner spUN Debaters.

Complete the Assessment below regarding Note Taking During the Debate.

  • Session B-4- Cross-Examination in spUN Debates

During the 2025 spUN Debate format debaters will engage in a cross examination, also known as flex or crossfire.

The examination will be between a member of the Affirmative and Negative teams.

Cross- Ex is a time for questions, not statements or constructive arguments - there are other opportunities for that in the debate format's rebuttal.  It can be a powerful tool to demonstrate not only the ability of a debater to think critically and on-the-spot, but also to set up a refutation later in the debate format.

To prepare for the cross-ex portion of the 2025 spUN Debate, watch the following 11-minute video and complete the quiz below.

  • Session B-5: Universalization - What does it really mean?

The spUN Debates (space policy and UNiversalization) program is a unique marriage of debating  that will serve to inform and educate your viewing audience.  This Tournament aims to bring the concept of universalization into how to govern and in developing a way to govern that benefits all people. Part of the judging criteria is that you incorporate universalization into your treatment of the arguments in defending your resolution positions.

The podcast below discusses the concept of universalization and opens the window of wonderment into how to begin the construction of governing our universe.

Please view the 12 min 23 sec video, with a mind open to the future!
