    • Etchings 1-59

View an animated slide show of the 59 etchings from the Martius-Spix expedition to Brazil. Etchings by Karl von Martius, expedition leader. Digitally colored on Photoshop by Carol Miranda Chor and Alberto Chor. These etchings display the various regions and habitats of Brazil.

    • Rainforest from Space

NASA"s Landsat photos of tropical rainforests from 1970 to 2012 show the patterns of deforestation that is destroying habitats all over the Earth. Does the land today display the lush, oxygen rich abundance of the rainforest etchings from the Martius-Spix expedition 1817-1820 ?

    • Earth is constantly changing. Some changes are a natural part of the climate system, such as the seasonal expansion and contraction of the Arctic sea ice pack. The responsibility for other changes, such as the Antarctic ozone hole, falls squarely on humanity’s shoulders. Our World of Change series documents how our planet’s land, oceans, atmosphere, and Sun are changing over time.

    Lesson : Populate Your Rainforest

Today you will be looking at images from the rainforest explorers of the 1800s. How many of these plants and animals still exist today ? Much of our natural habitat is threatened with extinction. If we lose the honeybees, how will the crops be pollinated ?

    • Open Explore Plants and Explore Animals to choose you favorites. You will record their names on your Extinction report and search for them on www.google.com to find their common names and to determine if they are  possibly extinct. One indicator of extinction is the absence of modern photos on the internet.

Remember if you really want to Go Green and save our planet, you will tell other people about what’s happening to our Earth. Your class may calculate the percentage of extinctions and make a report of your findings for the newspaper.

Remember the Rainforest 2 is an Eco coloring book that teaches basic Eco concepts. It is the story of students lost in the rainforest looking for Green Girl's Eco Club. There are suggested readings for older students. RTR2 poses the question, "Why be a Tree Killer when you can be an Eco SuperHero?"
